[Standard] Kuroshitsuji - Ronald Knox
PLAYER
NAME: Faust
CHARACTER
NAME(S): Ronald Knox
AGE: No specific age given or if reapers reach the hundreds but he looks to be in his early 20s. 22?
CANON: Kuroshitsuji
BACKGROUND HISTORY:
Black Butler is about a boy who contracts a demon and who now has to serve as his butler in order for him to extract revenge on the people who made his life shit, giving up his soul once said revenge is complete. But he has to find whoever was responsible first all while investigating matters for Victoria, the then queen of England as per his family's unofficial line of work. Supernatural whodunits and shenanigans ensue. Residing in this same universe are reapers who do what reapers stereotypically do: pick up the souls of the dead. They usually show up when boy and demon face baddies who somehow hinder the release of a soul after death.

Ronald Knox was born around the 1700s. He doesn't remember his mother or father but his earliest memories involved the workhouses of Tottenham in North London. He's a city boy, born and bred and it shows through his ridiculous accent and slang. There were times when he would sneak out of the workhouse and steal food off the marketplace. Made a friend with a baker this way thus his favorite food still happens to be a warm bun of any sort. Bread makes him happy.
Now, Tottenham happened to be a hotbed of gangs. Go figure. This is actually why he decided to learn how to use a knife from some of the older kids from the workhouse, a skill he would carry even as a reaper. The master of the workhouse was in a few illegal dealings with these gangs, making a little extra income thanks to them. Sadly, our little Ronald heard of these things but... that wouldn't do. That wouldn't do at all. What's one less orphan?
It was raining that night.
He was only fifteen when he died.
But next he knew, he awoke lying in an apartment room with sunlight streaming through the windows and a quick knocking on the door. "Rookie, get up. You're gonna be late for orientation." is the first thing he hears. Of course, this makes no sense for him. Unfortunately, he can't remember much else as everything is suddenly fuzzy. He can only vaguely remember his life in the workhouse and all he can recall as his most recent memory is being clubbed hard on the back of the head and rain. Cold, relentless rain.
What happened afterward was a long period of training and study: how to read and write, how to operate a typewriter, the proper handling of a scythe, judgement of a cinematic record. With each day, he found less and less of his childhood memories slipping away. He was popular with his classmates thanks to his natural charisma and charm. His instructors however, found him insufferable due to his constant tardiness and oftentimes sloppy work. But no matter how much they wanted to scold him, they couldn't. All it took was one simple turn of phrase, a compliment here and he was off the hook.
And then Mister Spears showed up.
It was during a particular field training session that they first met. As usual, Ronald was late but strangely, his charm didn't work with William. He went through the day the usual way he did, slacking off, doing poorly and he did get scolded.
Again.
And again.
And again.
On this particular field session, Ronald got hurt during a spar. Yet instead of kicking his ass for being careless, William actually lent him his handkerchief and scolded him again. However at the end of this class, William left Ronald with the words that he had potential. Hard ass Mister Spears may have been, he knew how to instill morale in his trainees. For a boy from the slums, brought up in the workhouse and being told he would amount to nothing, these were valuable words. Words he had never heard in his life.
And that was when Ronald decided to straighten up and fly right. He would pass his classes and get assigned to Dispatch where the best of the best were sent. There were only four reapers at the moment. Four out of a hundred. Out of a thousand. Soon to be five.
For his final exam, he was to judge and reap the soul of a young man doomed to suicide from a broken heart. That event showed him the value of a life, how one shouldn't throw their lives away. His final grades:
Practical Skills: B
Written Exams: C
Ethics: B
Though his final exam scores weren't exactly stellar, his work on the final reaping went pretty well considering he was able to wrangle a soul back from a demon. The fact he'd managed to do that straight out of the gate earned him enough commendation to get into Dispatch... after writing an apology and filling it into triplicate.
Under William's wing, he was polished into being a far more competent reaper. His writing was polished and his paperwork became near flawless. Of course, he was still as much a slacker as ever. But perhaps not so much as he used to be.
Headcanon ends here
The first we see of him is at the end of the Circus Arc. Ciel and Sebastian go undercover to join a Circus when they hear that kids are disappearing and their queen is worried. When Sebastian sets fire to the manor after confronting and defeating the arc's Big Bad, Ronald was the reaper who arrives to back William up in collecting the souls released during the fire.
The next we see of Ronald is when Ciel boards a cruise liner from request of his fiance and to investigate a mysterious association known as the Aurora Society who are said to be able to raise the dead. Naturally, this means reaper involvement. Ronald is the first reaper on the scene, first seen rushing to the ship (Running late again, obviously) and mingling in the lower class deck. It's from Ronald that Sebastian and Ciel hear about how to defeat the zombies and the fact that the reapers are aware of the situation. Later on, he's joined by Grell and the two of them proceed to collect the souls of those consumed by the zombies. One Victorian edition of World War Z later, Ronald and Grell find themselves fighting against a legendary reaper who reveals himself to be the real mastermind behind the zombies.
PERSONALITY:
From the get go, one would never have guessed Ronald Knox was a grim reaper. After all, when one thinks “reaper”, one gets the mental image of a somber creature in a hooded cloak that bears a scythe. Nothing could be further from the truth. Ronald is a ball of sunshine, to say the least: enthusiastic and with a positive attitude toward anything as well as his rather depressing job. Well, most anything save for threats to his life, his job and his free time. Truth be told, his occupation doesn’t seem to faze him one bit. To him, the terrifying beyond known as death is just a job. Souls are there to be collected, filed away and apologized for should they fall into the hands (and digestive system) of a demon before collection. Like every job, every department needs a slacker. Ronald can be a little careless with his work, blaming his impetuousness on his age. His main motivation for getting anything done seems to be found in avoiding overtime and staying out of trouble. Despite this, he has troubles with staying on time and often arrives on the scene of a collection five minutes late.
Like any young man around his age, Ronald seeks to make the most of his youth. Most his free time is spent in pursuit of two things he considers just important as his job: women and parties. Every hour of overtime is every hour away from another shindig he could be at. Little mixers after hours, a drinking session at the local pub, you name it, he probably has enough connections to get you in. And of course, what’s a party without a date? Dates are easy enough to get for this particular reaper. Just a turn of the phrase, a well placed compliment and the ladies just flock to him. He’s more than aware of his particular charm and he uses it to pool a favor or two from the General Affairs department like oh, say, modifying his death scythe? His rather unique sense of style lends a hand to this as well. One can say Ronald has a rather strong sense of individuality, a need to stand out from his other mourning-suit clad peers. While other reapers prefer a sturdy set of leather shoes, Ronald has gone and chosen a pair of white oxfords. While most reapers go with hair of a deep brown or black (slicked down or otherwise), this one goes with dual-toned yellow and black for his mess. Anything to set him apart from the crowd and perhaps make it easier for any female to remember him.
Maybe the fact he wears his tie looser or that he doesn’t keep the top button of his shirt done up that gives Ronald an almost sloppy appearance despite his sense of evident style. However, it isn’t merely with his uniform that he keeps a rather laid back appearance. Most everything he does gives it off, even in battle. In a fight, this outward appearance serves as a good front. While most would underestimate him for this, touting him as careless and childish, Ronald is nothing like this and knows when it’s time to get serious. However, he’ll do it in his own fashion: managing to make smart quips and the occasional comment even in the heat of battle. In this vein, he’s quite the unorthodox fighter for a reaper which gives him even more of an advantage. “Relying on your death scythe is kind of old fashioned” he can be quoted in saying after managing to slice Sebastian’s cheek with a butterfly knife he’d kept concealed until the last moment. A difficult task, considering who he was facing.
While Ronald isn’t really the sort to dwell on things or let anything really weigh him down, you can’t really say that he isn’t paying attention. It simply is the way he is. Despite his attitude, one can’t really say Ronald hates his job nor does he seem to have no intention of doing well at it. Perhaps his failings truly are due to his age which, as he says, is the age in which one just tends to be a little bit cheeky. He does rather well for himself, however: every soul is properly collected, filed and stamped as expected.
Maybe all he needs is time to mature into a reaper worth respecting. For now, he remains a little green around the edges. Maybe his age is a valid excuse for his behavior. However, if you manage to look past this, you can see Ronald for what he is: a young man possibly fresh out of his Academy Training days with a thirst to prove himself and an undeniable thirst for life.
CHARACTER RELATIONSHIPS:
Ronald doesn't really have too many connections to the main cast. He only met Ciel and Sebastian during one arc after all. He thought Ciel was a git and what he knew of Sebastian came from Grell and "there's a demon on the ship if they hear about that they'll think I screwed up and I'll be in trouble". So… let's focus on his two largest relationships then: William T. Spears and Grell Sutcliffe.
He has a healthy respect for the two other reapers, seeing as they're his seniors. (He refers to them as "senpai" in the anime/manga). In regards to William, he doesn't really fear his boss per se. He actually seems confident in his standing in his employment despite his constant tardiness. Ronald takes a casual tone with William, not at all standing at attention and even teasing him on occasion. The boy figures that as long as he can make his actions look legit and not lazy, his job is fine.
Grell on the other hand is the fun senpai. Compared to William's stick-up-the-arse approach to reaping, Grell is the kind who's a little looser on missions. Ronald does hold the same respect as he does with their manager but he's… stricter around Grell. Oddly enough, he doesn't let Grell run off without a leash but instead works as a voice of reason, reminding his senior that there's work to be done. It isn’t to say he goes all William on her ass though.
STRENGTH OF HEART MOMENT SUMMARY:
>So brief summary of the arc: Titanic with zombies. Literally. The main cast finds themselves on a ship called the Campagnia which is slowly sinking because zombies have come to life and are wrecking havoc. Sometime near the end of the arc after a big reveal on why these zombies are here, Ronald finds himself having to fight off both a legendary reaper and a demon.
His reaction?
BRING IT ON.
Unfortunately, he ends up getting slashed in the chest with said legendary reaper's scythe but hey, he tried, right?
POWERS
SAMPLE - THE AWAKENING:
"Buggering hell..." Ronald muttered as he opened his eyes. Though he was sure he could see, it was still odd finding himself surrounded by nothing but pitch darkness. Instinctively, his hand went to his face as he felt for his glasses. Good. Still there. There would be hell to pay once the Board heard about the failed mission on the Campagnia and if he had lost his glasses to boot. His second instinct was to check for wounds. Oddly, nothing hurt. He was certain a wound from a Death Scythe would take longer than a few minutes to heal... so just how long had he been out anyway?
Do you want power, boy?
The voice that came from both darkness and within his own head caused him to sit up immediately. "Hullo?" he called to no one in particular, hoping that the voice would respond again.
Stand and move forward, the voice urged. Can you do that?
"I can try." he replied, propping himself up with one arm. There was a wince as he strained to stand but surprisingly it only came from his muscles as they sought to steady him from having been spread out on the floor for who knows how long. But after the initial strain, he found that nothing else hurt and he could move. The darkness around him parted, spreading out to reveal three pillars.
"So, what now? Is this how I get out?" he asked, stepping forward toward one pedestal and reaching out to lightly touch the blade of the sword that floated before him.
Give the power which you seek form.
"M'not in the infirmary, am I? Not a dream?"
Give the power which you seek form.
"Alright, alright... blimey, you don't have to be so pushy about it." he sighed and turned his attention back to the three pillars. Power. The voice kept talking about power. Was that what all this was about? That sword in front of him looked like a toy but Ronald found himself reaching out to it, taking it and turning it in his hands. Power. This was what it felt like. He frowned down at the blade. If he had more power maybe that mission might have gone along smoother.
Is this the power you seek?
"...Yeah." he replied, and with that the sword disappeared from his hands.
And what shall you give up in return?
He looked around, focusing on the two other pillars in the room. A staff and a shield. Part of this read like some odd delusion. Maybe he hit his head too hard when he landed after that blow but there was something else, something deeper about it. He approached the shield, looking up at it. Shields were for protection. He didn't need to protect anyone. Mister Spears, Mister Sutcliffe... they could do well enough on their own. Why, given enough power, he could take down the Undertaker all on his own. "I choose that then." he replied, picking up the shield which disappeared almost immediately as he made his declaration. The pillars sank into the ground and before him rose a door.
Now step forth and face the darkness.
He reached out for the doorknob and turned it.
SPECIAL ABILITIES:
Character's Canon Abilities:
Reapers are gifted with several abilities, most of which help with their duties of soul collecting and occasional fending off demons:
Enhanced speed and strength
Enhanced endurance
Soul Collection
This usually comes into play with use of something called a To Die list in which the name and basic information of the soul that has to be collected is noted down. Once the soul has been successfully collected, the file is stamped and put away. Reapers are expected to submit a written apology along with a report in the instance of a demon managing to steal a soul before collection.
Summoning a Death Scythe
Reapers are equipped with one death scythe which takes the form of a particular piece of gardening equipment. Ronald’s in particular takes the form of a lawnmower. Admittedly, this makes for the least dramatic deaths ever if you picture your last moments being run over by a lawnmower. It’s been noted that his death scythe has been modified. One cut from a Death Scythe severs a human’s memories from their soul, thus officially ending their life. Their blades also possess the ability to cut through everything save for other Death Scythes.

Cinematic Record
*As his reaping ability isn't part of his physical skills, they can be nerfed.
*As per his awakening, Ronald had chosen the path of the swordmage
>Basic level magic
>Retains the ability to use both his knife and his mowerscythe. Said scythe however has lost its soul collecting properties, most likely and is close to a normal lawnmower now albeit with the same strange alloy that can cut through everything. If not allowed to have his mower, we can settle for something that would work akin to either a skateboard or a hyped up moped.
*His fighting style incorporates his mower, using it to enhance his own speed or as a distraction to his opponent while he charges in with the knife.
INVENTORY:
>1x Mourning suit (consisting of 1x black blazer, 1x dress shirt, 1x black tie, 1x black vest)
>1x shiny red lawnmower
>1x black fedora
>1x black trenchcoat
>1x white leather oxfords
>1x butterfly knife
NOTES/ASPIRATIONS
I missed having this guy in a game and I figured somewhere small like Saudade in an environment with people I know would be good.
